The John Bromfield Society
The John Bromfield Society was established to honor those members and friends who make planned gifts to the Boston Athenæum. This includes, but is not limited to, bequest intentions, life income gifts, and gifts of life insurance or retirement plans.
The Bromfield Society was named in honor of the Boston merchant who made the initial bequest of $25,000 to the Athenæum in 1846. His gift has grown to more than $6.5 million and has enabled the Library to maintain its distinction as one of the country’s leading membership libraries.
The Bromfield Society is now in its tenth year and boasts over 100 members. Members are invited to the annual meeting and dinner, as well as special financial planning and cultural programs throughout the year. Members also are recognized in the Bromfield Society roster in the Athenæum’s Annual Report, unless they request to be anonymous. The Bromfield Society welcomed 7 new members this past year.
